WEATHER IN 1965
Late Winter Conditions
Severe drought conditions early in 1965 were relieved in March by substantial rains followed by cloudy weather, according to a summary of last year’s weather readings at Lincoln College. Winter conditions began in May and on a number of occasions snow fell to low levels through to and including December. For farming autumn provided adequate feed, when feed reserves were low. The winter, although dull and damp, was relatively free of severe frosts. Spring and early summer being damp provided more feed, and the best looking crops for some years. Rainfall for the year was 29.93 inches.
Abundant pasture growth throughout the spring made topping necessary early in December, but little harvesting was carried out before the end of the month. In December, stock health presented no problems, and milk production continued at a high level. Production in the home garden was better than for several years, and was maintained without frequent watering. The highest maximum temperature was 88.1, which was recorded on December 15. The lowest temperature of 34 degrees was recorded on December 28. In December there were only two days on which frost was recorded, and the rainfall was 1.35 inches. The sun shone for 245.2 hours, compared with 267.8 hours in December, 1964.
