No New Names In Shield Cricket

\'EW Zealand’s new cricket selectors can not have been encouraged by performances in the Plunket Shield matches completed so far.

When the New Zealand team toured India, Pakistan and England last year, the most significant features were the instability of the batting, the erratic catching, and the fine pace bowling. So far this season, the fast

bowling has again been successful, all the shield teams have dropped catches in large numbers, and the scoring has been low.

Northern Districts has not produced a form batsman, and in Central Districts, the only player to make a particular impression has been M. J. F. Shrimpton, an enigmatic sort of cricketer, who has made three good

scores in six innings. Otago’s only successful batsman has been K.lbadulla, the Warwickshire, Pakistanborn professional, and although G. P. Bilby started for Wellington with an innings of 161 against Otago, he has not since done much to improve his chances of New Zealand selection. It is encouraging, however, to find B. W. Sinclair in good form. Auckland's batting, too, has been highly erratic and Canterbury’s, in the upper echelons, very unsatisfactory.

The success of fast and medium-pace bowlers has been quite consistent. J. A. Beuth did particularly well for Northern District against against Canterbury. R. 0. Collinge (Central Districts) has had one good return, F. J. Cameron (Otago) is still working on opposing batsmen succesfully, and for Wellington, N. A. Huxford, A. R. Taylor and H. A. Morgan have all achieved good figures. Auckland’s R. S. Cunis and R. E. Sutton have both had their measure of success, and for Canterbury R. C. Motz, G. A. Bartlett, and B. R. Taylor have been most effective. Some of the spinners have performed well, notably N. Puna (Northern Districts), B. W. Yuile (Central Districts), L. C. Butler (Wellington), J. T. Sparling (Auckland) and J. M. Mclntyre (Canterbury). But the season so far has not thrown up any new personality likely to improve New Zealand’s prospects of footing it with England next month. And time is running out
