HAAST PASS ROAD
Tractor Gap Of
Three Miles
Work on the Haast Pass highway has now been pushed so far ahead from both ends that there is a gap of only three miles between the points capable of being reached by tractors.
“But it will be a long time before any work begins on that section.” said Mr D. A. Lane, the Ministry of Works district civil engineer in Christchurch. “The section from the Whakapohai river to just north of Grave creek is negotiable only by tractor, and the contractors will be working on that section for a long time.
“It is virgin heavy bush on very steep sidling country, and numerous culverts have to’ be built. From the south the Ministry of Works has reached a point just north of Grant creek.”
The' highway is to be of full width all the way, and completion is planned for the end of next year.
