Cost Estimated At £1250 WHANGAREL June 16. The four men who escaped from Whangarei police station lock-up on June 5 had intended to steal firearms from a Kaikohe shop and shoot it out with the police if necessary, Detective Sergeant L. F. O’Shea told Mr G. R. Herd, S.M., today. ’ Before the Court were Harry Charlie Mathews, .aged 19, Barry Hughes, aged 19, Alexander Edward Roberts, aged 18, and Bryan Burton, aged 24, who today admitted 20. charges, including joint charges of breaking and entering and car conversion, and other charges connected with their escape. Burton is awaiting trial on a charge of rape. Detective Sergeant O’Shea said that after the escape from Whangarei, four cars were stolen from Whangarei, Kawakawa, Kaikohe and Paihia, and the men stole property worth £2373. It was estimated the search for the men cost the taxpayer £1250.
