Devolve Purchased By Trainer From Sydney
Devolve, the winner of four races this season, has been sold by his Addington trainer, H. Greenhorn, to the Sydney trainer, A. Phillis, who spent more than a week in New Zealand. Devolve, which realised a four-figure price, is to be shipped along with a number of pacers and trotters towards the end of the mu.ith.
Phillis also purchased the maiden trotter, Anstey’s Cove, from the Addington trainer, R. Young, and the brood mare, Hindu Princess. Another Sydney trainer, L. C. Chant, who trains a number of horses for Mr C. L. Rhodes, of Christchurch, was another recent visitor to Christchurch. He has leased the First Lord gelding. Lord Mina, from his Addington trainer, A. W. Stark.
Devolve, which cost Greenhorn £5O, showed outstanding ability. . At times he was slow away in his races and he often pulled very hard. He raced only this season and from 14 starts he gained four wins and three platings worth £975. He attracted attention when iat his first race start he finished third to Gershwin and Safe Flight at New Brighton last September. After that race several four-figure offers were refused for him. He gained his first win at the Amberley Trotting Club’s non-totalisator meeting. After some rather disappointing racing, which included two! placings, be showed splendid form when he won three races I at the Westport Christmas
meeting. He won by four lengths from Tunnel Road in the Scanlon Handicap, and later the same day, when pen. alised 36 yards, he beat Silver Mica by more than three lengths in the Gothard Handicap. He won just as easily on the second day of the meeting when he beat Ruling Caste in the Westport Handicap, a race Greenhorn had trained Hindu Princess to win four years earlier. Devolve, which also showed great speed at the trotting gait, is a four-year-old gelding by Forward from Allure, a sister to Haughty and other winners. Allure left other winners in Assure and Attract Young Trotter Anstey’s Cove should be a good prospect in Australia. She was bought by Young as a two-year-old and was very lightly raced. She had five unplaced starts this season, but at times has shaped like an early winner. Anstey’s Cove is a four-year-old mare by Dalewen from Gwen Gamble. Hindu Princess, the winner of four races, paid her way for Mr T. B. Gillard, of Christchurch. She has a colt foal at foot by Forward.
Hindu Princess should have value as a stud proposition. She is an eight-year-old mare by Brahman from a brilliant mare in Riviera, ,by U. Scott, and is a sister to Ruling Caste.
Lord Mina won his way to a 2min 15sec mark and, but for bad luck on occasions, his record would have been better. He more than paid his way this season when he had 17 starts for two wins and five
placings worth £1055 in stakes. His wins were at the expense of Smokey Hall at Greymouth in January and Central Range at Hutt Park in Februay. His placings included a second to Glenurquhart in a sprint at Addington in March. Lord Mina is a si w-vear-oid gelding by First Lord from Linda Grattan, by Grattan Loyal. He is a brother to a speedy pacer in Mighty Mina. The stallion, Stonnyway. the trotter, Kingwarned, and Golden Rule and other horses purchased by Mr A. Jones, of Sydney, will also be shipped at the end of the month.
Stonnyway, the leading sire iin New South Wales this season, has been leased by Mr Connolly to Mr L. W. Wise, of the Carlton Stud, Sydney. • Kingwarned has been sold to Mr R. Purnell, of Sydney. He is a seven-year-old stallion by King Scott from a useful trotter in Forewarned. He has not raced this season, and has been off the winning list since he beat Gazeaway and Oakleigh Lad at Blenheim in February, 1962, when he was raced and trained bv J- G. McDonald, of Yaldhurst
