RACING Waverley Shows Sharp Speed In Training Run
Waverley was one of the most impressive trialists at Riccarton yesterday. He has an engagement in the Maronan Handicap at Ashburton on Saturday, and could make amends for an unlucky run in the Grange Handicap at the Oamaru meeting. .
Waverley galloped strongly and keenly to |t record 53 l-ssec for half a mile on the outside of the course proper. He was ridden by F. H. Skelton, who also j| rode him at Oamaru. but will be unable to , make the weight of 7-11 at Ashburton. j
Waverley was going well; with a winning chance on the home turn at Oamaru until he was carried wide and: bumped by Picket He struck a leg in this incident and became unbalanced, drifting back to ninth. The leg injury will not; affect his programme and he. may be the pick of those in the bottom part of the handicap in the Ashburton mile. M. J. Wildermoth may ride Waverley on Saturday. Plans for a rider for Apache, a form runner for the Maronan Handicap, were up in the air yesterday morning. Undecided N. Eastwood, who rode Apache in the Oamaru Winter Cup in which the four-year-old was a good fourth, had not decided yesterday whether he would take that mount again or ride Count Pedro. D. N. Hadfield rode Apache yesterday when he galloped half a mile with Bridie O’Cally (N. Eastwood) in 53 3-ssec. Bridie O’Cally won' the gallop by half a length, but Apache was reducing her lead and going nicely. Earlier. Picca Leigh (Messent) also shaped well in a Maronan Handicap trial but she was shaded by her stable-
l mate Shakes (Bruning). ’ j ■ which was going easily on the I ! outside finishing half a mile ; I in 53 l-ssec. Shakes will have a race at ( I Washdyke before going to ( ; Trentham for the Whyte Han- < dicap. He has never worked j : more keenly than he has done t 1 . lately. i The stablemates Keep * -. (Reriti) and Coral Chief (Me- ( . Cann) ran a mile in tmin 52 . • l-ssec and the last half j strongly in 53 4-ssec. He ; t hung badly -when pacemaking in the open sprint at ! • Oamaru. 1 Charlborough (N. East-:* ! wood) ran a mile in Imin 50- ' l-ssec, and showed ability to: i shade Gilpey (Collins), which’; . joined in for the last five fur-.: ■: longs.
They were together at the half-mile, then Gilpey ran to a lead of about two lengths. But Charlborough had easily the strongest finish and won
;the gallop by a neck. He ran; ■ his last half-mile in 53 4-ssec. \ Other gallops:— Six Furlongs.—Prince Cal-, lan (C. T.
