City To Help Filling
To expedite the filling of the Waimairi County Council’s refuse tip near the Christchurch airport, the City Council agreed that St. Albans ward vehicles would use the tip, supplying about the same amount of rubbish as the county council, and that the city would provide 100 yards a week of suitable covering material.
A good part of the fill could be provided from road works in the north-west part of the city and any deficit made up from the pit at the airport, the works committee said.
On the Lake Bryndwr Water Ski Club’s application to form a water ski ground to the west of the airport, the committee said an area of water near the airport could well be as great an attraction to gulls as the refuse pit. “The Department of Civil Aviation is not prepared to take any risks,” said the chairman (Cr. A. R. Guthrey). “It is just bad luck for the water ski club that it chose this particular spot.” Cr. Guthrey said it would probably take J 2 months to fill the refuse pit. The area had to be filled, not just closed.
The pit was not the sole attraction for gulls, he said, and research which was being done at the council’s expense on gulls at the airport would be of great value in Christchurch and elsewhere.
