CLEETHORPES, June 16.
The remaining three New Zealanders have withdrawn after nine days of the 14-day cycling tour of Britain. D. Grave again suffered dysentery and R. Thomson did not finish the ninth stage.
M. Payne, a South African-co-opted into the New Zealand team, finished 54th. He said he would not- continue.
The race organiser, Mr C. Messenger, said that after hearing of the New Zealanders’ reputation and their performance in the six-day New Zealand tour, he had been disappointed by their showing in Britain. He attributed to lick of preparation and the more testing English racing to the team’s poor showing. Thomson described the Tour of Britain as an “acrobatic endurance test.” Competing In France “It would have been a different matter if this had been a full-scale New Zealand team and we were prepared to make this our one and only effort. “But we must be ready for the Tour de France. We knew we had gained entry only after, coming here for this tour,” said Thomson. A. Metcalfe (England) retained the yellow jersey as over-all race leader and was more than six minutes ahead. His time after 901 miles is 37hr 51min 7sec.
