Canterbury Names 14 For S.I. Rugby Team

If one more nomination had been made Canterbury 7 could have yielded a full South Island side.

Last evening, at a meeting of the management committee of the Rugby Union, the Canterbury selectors nominated 14 players for the South Island team which will play North Island at Auckland on July 4.

Members of the committee showed some surprise when the list of players was read out.

Mr D. B. Doake said: “Well, some years ago we nominated 16.”

There were no surprises in the nominations, except possibly the young Suburbs halfback, L. Davis. His nomination probably has been made on potential.

In several cases the selectors have nominated two players for one position, D. C. Leary and W. F. McCormick as full-backs and R. C. Moreton and D. A. Arnold as second five-eighths or centre.

The players nominated are: Backs.—Leary and McCormick (full-back), W. M. Birtwistle (wing), Arnold and Morton (second five-eighths or centre), B. A. Watt (first

five-eighths), L. Davis (halfback). Forwards.—J. M. LeLievre (prop), J. N. Creighton (hooker), R. Wainohu (No. 8), I. H. Penrose No. 8 or side row), D. J. Graham (side row), M. C. Meikle and A. J. Hopkinson (locks). Two from Nelson

Other South Island nominations reported by the New Zealand Press Association are: South Canterbury: A. J. Stewart and R. H Dench (locks), R. C. Vercoe (No. 8), T. N, Lister (No. 8, flanker, and lock), and R. B. Currie (hooker). Buller: J. Halsall, B. Roche, O. Nahr (forwards); B. Stack (wing). Nelson: E. N. Fitzsimmons (prop), M. J. Delany (fullback). Maori Nominations The following players have been nominated for the South Island Maori team: Baeks.—G. Waterreus, A. F. Orme, S. McGregor, L. S.

Taiaroa, R. Ward, P. D. Carter.

Forwards.—R. Wainohu, R. Tuhuru, H. Stuart, L. Karaka, S. Jackson, W. F. Carell, D. Couch, D. Shaw, J. Walker, T. Norton. Five Referees

Messrs R. O. McDowell, M. R. Barnett, A. P. Guernsey, A. R. Taylor and L. S. Kirk have been nominated as referees for provincial matches. Mr Guernsey is the only new member of the panel.
