HOME FOR CEREBRAL PALSIED
A ho.use at 14 Bristol street, at the. corner of Berry street, St. Albans, has been acquired by the Adult Cerebral Palsy Society as a transitory hostel for men. Five men will be taken into the home as soon as it is open in about six months; and provision will be made for three more if necessary. •The five men booked to go' in are at present at the Templeton Hospital and are working full time at the Disabled Servicemen’s League’s centre in Riccarton. They have no families to look after them, and are at Templeton because there is nowhere else for them to go.
They will pay £5 a week board in the new home, but it is not intended that their residence there should be permanent. The purpose of the home is to help to prepare them for the break from an institution before taking private board or otherwise looking after themselves. The home will also take six cerebral palsied persons for a month at, a time to enable parents to have a rest, and accommodation will also be provided for cerebral palsied awaiting admittance to a Government home planned for Canterbury. Mr J. A. Hendry, an archi-
tect,' is giving his services to prepare plans for alterations and additions to the home. The society will' have to furnish the house, .and any gifts of furniture, linen, drapes, or any other household equipment would be most acceptable, said the secretary of the society (Mrs C. G. Crawford). The society has about £2OOO in hand for alterations to the home, but much more will be needed. It is intended to apply for a Golden Kiwi lottery grant. The Christchurch branch of the Timaru Main Old Girls’ Association gave £270 from its stall held in Cathedral square in February.
