Basketball Selectors Face Difficult Task

’THE Canterbury women’s ■*" basketball selectors (Mesdames A. Nichol, O. Shannahan and Miss H. Yates) will have a very difficult task in choosing the players to represent the province this season. Of the 21 trialists in the Canterbury training squad* 15 have had previous New Zealand tournament experience.

However, the selectors have plenty of time to consider their prospects, for Canterbury’s first representative match will be at the

South Island tournament, tobe held at Invercargill, which does not begin until August 1.

L. Price (New Brighton), N. Gilligan (formerly Miss Fahey, Sacred Heart), H. Hutton (West A), J. Kimber, C. Brown (Technical) and S. Langrope (Teachers’ College) are all playing up to the form which gained them selection in last season’s Canterbury team. J. Blair (New Brighton), P. Edmonds (Technical), C. McMaster (West A) and J. Martin (Sacred Heart), who were all away with the New Zealand team last year, are also available.

E. Hook (St. Nicholas) and K. O'Reilly (Sacred Heart), former South Canterbury representatives, have improved considerably with the harder games they have had to play in Christchurch and have undoubtedly earned their places in the training squad.

The six new trialists, who have not had previous national tournament experi-

ence, are all promising. M. Hansen, wing attack, and P. Oldham, wing defence, have played Soundly for West A this season, while S. Dunn, a senior reserve representative last season, has proved an excellent goal-thrower. S. Kenyon has shown considerable talent as a wing defence for West B. G. Bashford, another senior reserve representative last year, earned her place in the trials with an excellent game a fortnight ago as goal-defence for St Nicholas. The wing attack, A. Britten (Teachers* College) has shown plenty of speed. She was a member of the Cashmere High School A team last season.
