RACING STEEPLES TODAY AT INVERCARGILL

Shootalong Looks Rest Prospect “The Press’’ Special Service INVERCARGILL, May 19. Shootalong, which feh on the first day of the meeting, will be expected to open his account for the season in the Orepuki Steeplechase on the second day of the Southland Racing Club’s winter meeting tomorrow.

Shootalong, a half-brother to a capable galloper in Struan, has impressed as one of the most promising of the younger steeplechasers. His first-day mishap was not of Ms own making and he should hold this field, which will be depleted by the scratching of Raglan. King’s Lace, and Mighty Robin. The first-day winner Cassius will again be expected to make a race of it. There was further rain today and although the weather cleared in the afternoon the track will be heavy. The T.A.B. double will be run on the Waiau and Clif-

den Handicaps, for which Solus and Blue Haven look a likely combination. Solus

won as he liked on the first day and although he will Strike heavier ground there is little in this field likely to test him. He will be ridden by R. J. Skelton, who will be on Napra in the second leg. Napra finished well for fifth against the milers last week, but is likely to be bet-

ter suited over seven furlongs tomorrow. Blue Haven, however, could be the one to beat.

The withdrawal of Ronson Light in the Southland Steeplechase reduces the field to four runners and gives an idea of the weakness of southern steeplechase fields

The Riverton winner Sir Edwin will handle the heavy ground and will run out the journey better than most. If he is to be beaten Le Roi looks the most likely. Riding engagements include:—
