CRICKET Cambridge Need 99 To Avoid Innings Defeat

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright)

CAMBRIDGE, May 19. The Australians will have to dismiss the last seven Cambridge University batsmen for 98 runs or less today to avoid batting again in the match which ends at Fenners this afternoon. The University will resume its second innings today at three for 120. Ninety-nine runs are needed to avoid an innings defeat. The University was all out for 230 in the first innings in reply to the Australians three for 449 declared.

It is virtually four wickets down as the opening bat N. Alwyn has a broken toe, received when he was struck on the boot by the fast bowler R. Gaunt on Wednesday. He will bat only if needed. In six hours and a half Cambridge lost only 10 wickets as the weak Australian attack toiled away on a pitch full of runs. Hard Work Tlie Australian bowlers were made to look very ordinary indeed as they made such hard work of getting the University batsmen out. Admittedly, the attack was depleted by the loss of Gaunt, who has an injured side, and R. Benaud. who is still resting his injured shoulder. However, the regular bowlers I. Quick and F. Misson, did not look good. The star of the Cambridge side was the 19-year-old wicket-keeper M. Brearley who got 73 in the first innings and is 69 not out in the second.

Brearley defied the Australian bowlers for most of the day and he will still be there this morning to resume his innings. He has already scored more

than 450 runs this season, his first in first class cricket. The Australians seem certain to make this their third successive win but it has been a laborious effort. Scores: — AUSTRALIANS First innings, for three declared .. .. 449 CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY First Innings
