PROTEST TO COUNCIL
Shop For Tunnel Workers
A licence recently granted to Mr F. W. Chambers by the Heathcote County Council, to sell certain commodities to Lyttelton road tunnel construction workers, was “completely unjustified,” Mr I. H. Flanagan, a Heathcote storekeeper, told the council on Thursday night. The licence had damaged his business and that of Mr D. Lawrence, he said. He thought the licence should be reviewed. The council, however, decided to take no action.
Neither Mr Lawrence nor he had been invited to give tenders to the FletcherKaiser combine for the supply of the goods which Mr Chambers was now selling. Mr Flanagan said. They had supplied the tunnel workers satisfactorily before Mr Chambers had started his business, and- could make any necessary arrangements for the resumption of the supply. The licence was for icecream, tobacco, pies, and other commodities not specified.
The council debated the matter in committee, but decided to take no action.
