Shooting Of Birds
Sir.—The article on the shooting of mutton birds at Lake Ellesmere leaves me alarmed for the safety of all the other protected birds in the area. Each year we have reports of white herons, blue herons, teal ducks, and now mutton birds being killed to satisfy the blood lust of a fortunately few shooters. “As long as it flies it can be shot at.” is the opinion of these sadists. I would hate to fly over there on a misty morning in a Tiger Moth. The game bird clubs, Acclimatisation Society, and other groups should do something constructive to protect these birds. The shooting of ducks is rapidly becoming distasteful to all thinking people and it is only a matter of time before all killing will cease. If the shooters what to carry on with this carnage let more care be taken in what they aim at.—Yours, etc., B.N. May 18, 1961.
