Upper Orari Bridge

Sir, —Your photo of the damaged Orari bridge (published Wednesday) was excellent. There has been talk of replacing this bridge since the early 1930's but the- depression and Second World War caused delays. Part of the bridge was swept away in the big South Canterbury floods of 1945 and again in 1951. Temporary repairs were made because of the war and post-war shortage of materials. Because most of the bridges in the county were destroyed or seriously damaged in these floods, the provision of the two-way structure in permanent materials Was deferred. The bridge is at the junction of two important State highways. Geraldine awaits an announcement by the National Roads Board that a safe two-way structure in permanent materials is planned.—Yours, etc.,

DOUGLAS C. McKECHNIE. Geraldine, May 17, 1961.
