SHEEP-THEFT CHARGES
Defence Evidence Ends tN.Z. Prees Association) NAPIER, May 19 Defence evidence ended this afternoon in the Supreme Court trial at Napier of a Porangahau farmer, John Douglas Ovens, aged 49. on 16 charges of sheep stealing. The Court adjourned till Monday morning when counsel will address the jury and Mr Justice McGregor wit! sum up.
“I am not a thief and I did not take any sheep from anybody’s property and all the strange sheep wandered on to mv various properties," said Ovens in evidence today. Ovens said he knew the strangers were on his property. but circumstances had prevented him from gathering them up.
Ovens said the appearance of strangers in sheep he sent to the Wainukurau sale on February 21 were there by accident as a result of them getting through the fence during the night He had separated them after a muster the day before. Ovens is represented by Mr H. W. Dowling, with him, Mr A. K. Monagan. Mr R. G. Gallen is representing the Crown.
