POLICY ON VACCINE
Availability Over 21
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, May 19 Steps are being taken to implement Government policy which will provide poliomyelitis vaccine at reasonable cost for those over 21, the Minister of Health <Mr Shelton) said in Auckland today. The policy is part of the National Party's election manifesto. Mr Shelton said he had already had preliminary talks with Health Department officers to get the policy operative. More discussion would be held soon. “There is certainly no lack of desire on my part to push ahead with this." Mr Shelton said. "We want to do it as soon as possible.” Yesterday the director of the Department's Public Health Division (Dr. D P, Kennedy) said in response to an Auckland inquiry that the difficulties of making the vaccine available to those over 21 were “virtually insurmountable.”
Storage problems were among the main difficulties, he said.
Mr Shelton indicated today that he thought the problems could be solved.
