“Idlers” Charged (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) DURBAN, May 19. The drive against “idlers” continued in Durban last night when European policemen in civilian clothes arrested many Africans waiting for buses. They were charged with offences concerning the pass and tax laws, reported British United Press. It was also reported that police set up road blocks in Pietermaritzburg and inspected cars.

The “Daily Express” reported in London that last night policemen moved into the South African Broadcasting Corporation's premises in Johannesburg and barbedwire defences were put up outside

“By the hour South Africa is becoming more of an armed camp. Ammunition dumps are being set up at tactical positions by the Army.”
