NEW NORTH OUTLET
"‘Kaiapoi In Agreement”
The Kaiapoi Borough Council was in complete agreement with the proposed northern motorway out of Christchurch, said the Mayor of Kaiapoi (Mr O. M Williams) yesterday. Mr Williams said he was perturbed by a statement on Thursday by Mr W W Wood, a member of a sub-committee formed by the Rangiora Borough Council and the Rangiora Businessmen’s Association to protest against the route.
“Mr Wood has left out certain pieces of informaticn and gives a completely wrong picture." Mr Williams said “Also. I don’t think he has any official status." In his statement Mr Wood said that the route suggested by Rangiora had not beer, shown to the Kaiapoi council
“This is not true.” Mr Williams said. “The Ministry of Works showed us this proposal as an alternative. There was no mention of its being a Rangiora suggestion.” Mr Wood also gave a wrong impression when he said that part of the route would have to be elevated, providing a ponding area if there was flooding by the Waimakarir; river. Mr Williams said
“This gives the impression 'hat the road would be elevated for a considerable distance The only elevation would be at the apnrnaches to bridges." Mr Williams said. Catchment Board “Mr Wood has been misinformed.” said Mr W W Brough, secretary of the North Canterbury Catehmen' Board, commenting on Mr Wood's statement that the board had not been officially consulted about the motorway
The matter was before the board on August 5. and the board told the Commissioner of Works that the bridge should be the full width of the river and the spans should be as long as possible 'aid Mr Brough.
