S.O.S. Signals From Sinking Launch
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, May 19. May Day distress signals picked up on ship-to-shore radios last night came from a commercial fisherman in the Kaipara harbour. The sender of the signals was Mr A H. Alexander, of Tinopai, whose 20ft launch. Lorraine, struck a rock near Port Albert, and sank. Rising water caused Mr Alexander to cease sending signals. Taking his radio, he rowed away in his dinghy and was picked up by another launch about a mile and a half away. The distress calls were picked up in Dargaville and also in Port Charles, in the Coromandel area.
