T.E.A.L. PROVISION AT WELLINGTON

(New Zealand Press Association)

WELLINGTON, May 18. Provision for T.E.A.L. would be made in the design of the new terminal for Wellington airport, said the chairman of the City Council airport committee (Mr W. H. Nankervis) today. Statistical information to be used for the plans is being obtained now, and Mr Nankervis said that the American consultant (Mr Leigh Fisher) would arrive here next month to advise on the functional plan of the new terminal. Mr Nankervis was asked if, in view of the Government’s indicated intention to

re-equip T.E.A.L. with pure jets—which cannot, in general, use Wellington airport —provision would be made for T.E.A.L. in the new terminal. The provision would be made, said Mr Nankervis. “I cannot envisage there not being a service between here and Australia,” he said A big percentage of the traffic was generated in the Wellington area. No-one knew what type of planes the Government was going to re-equip TEAL, with. Also, there was a lot of progress being made with pure jets. It appeared one new jet, the British Aircraft Corporation’s One-Eleven, could land at Wellington airport. The aim of the committee was to provide a new terminal within five years, he said. With the increased volume of traffic through the airport beyond all expectations the facilities were already “bulging at the seams."
