Sportsman’s Notebook SOUTH ISLAND TEAMS’ TABLE TENNIS
Entries from Dunedin. Timaru, and many local clubs have been received for the South Island Inter-club teams’ table tennis championship which will be played in Christchurch this week-end, at the Seiwyn Street Hall. Seiwyn. Christchurch, will defend the A. B, McCallum Cup, which it won when this competition was first held last season. The winning team on that occasion comprised V. N. Brightwell. T. R. D. Flint, and R. B. 'McCallum .and it is expected that the same three players will form the team this week-end. Other strong local entries will come from Eagles, Wallabies. and University. The Wallabies, team of N. B. Radford, K. F. Stevenson and M. A. Cox will seek to repeat its defeat of Seiwyn last week, and J. Armstrong's Eagles team cannot be overlooked.
Visiting teams whose entries have been received include three from Timaru and one from Dunedin. Representing the Tairi sub-asso-caition will be the promising J. B. Skinner and two others, and players in the three club teams from Timaru include T. Undedown, D. McKenzie, Mrs J, Brown, and C. and M. McFarlane.
# » • Yacht Mould
The Canterbury R-class Squadron has advised that a new squadron mould, to a design by D. Harrison, has recently been completed. Two shells have been taken off and the mould, which is portable, has been designed and constructed so that up to six shells may be built. The squadron will charge £lO deposit for the mould, of which £5 will be refunded if it is returned within four weeks. An extra £1 for each week over this time will be charged.

A well-known name in Rugby appeared again in Wellington last Saturday when C. S. Hogg took the field at full-back in the Onslow senior team against Taita. This, of course, was not the chairman of the New Zealand Rugby Union, but his eldest son. The 18-year-old Hogg has had an impressive career as a Wellington primary schools’ representative and a member of the Nelson College Ist XV. # m *
Badminton Entries An increase of nine teams,
from 50 to 59. is seen in the entries for the Canterbury Badminton Association’s 1961 inter-club competitions, which will commence on May 29. There will be seven teams in the A grade. 12 in the B grade. 16 in the C grade, 14 in the D grade and 10 in the president's grade. In the A grade will be University, Railway, Knox. Christchurch, Avonside. and two teams from the Selwyn Club. * • • Rugby In Malaya New Zealand has won the Rugby championship of the Far East Land Forces for the second consecutive year with its 2nd Battalion team. After the New Zealanders’ win in Armv Rugby championships in Malaya and between Malaya and Singapore, a new team, reformed because of the battalion’s operational commitments, was fielded for the tour of Hong Kong where the Far East championship was played. Representing Singapore-Malaya, the 2nd Battalion beat the winner of the Hong Kong side of the competition by 21 to 8 A second game against the Colony of Hong Kong representatives was lost 10-8 by the New Zealanders. sc * ♦ Pony Area Trials About 30 competitors will take part in the area trials, to be held today at Amo*. - ley. to select the teams to represent the Christchurch Pony Club in the Al and Dorothy Campbell Cups. The one-day event, which is being held on Mr J. Ashworth’s property, will be divided into three sections—dressage, show jumping, and ross country. The Al and Deeothy Campbell Cups, wtiide draw Dominion-wide competition, will be held at Timaru in September.
