ARMY EXERCISE AT BURNHAM

U.S. Officers To Take Part

Five United States Army officers, who are spending a month in New Zealand as part of an officer exchange system, will take part in a three-day exercise at Burnham Military Camp from June 9 to 11 for senior officers of the Regular Armv and Territorial Force. The five officers are Lieutenant Colonel W. W. Hawke (infantry), Major R. C. Smith. Captain L. D Haney, Captain J C. M. Hoyer (armoured) and Captain J R. Hinton (infantry). All are stationed at Hawaii.

The exercise. “Waitara,” at Burnham will be under the direction of Major-General L W. Thornton. Chief of Staff Military problems will be put to the officers who will try to answer them after group discussion. To make the problems more realistic relief models and maps will be used.

The American officers will take a full part in the exercise, and will work with their equivalent officers in the New Zealand Army. After the exercise ends the American officers will visit all military establishments in the South Island Their escort will be Major R. R. Harding. Royal New Zealand Army Service Corps
