CITY COUNCIL NEWS IN BRIEF

On the recommendation of its electricity committee, the City Council last evening reduced the service charge for welders from 2s a kva to 6d a kva a month where the rated capacity of welding transformers is 25 per cent, or more of the total connected industrial loading of a consumer. and dropped the charge altogether where the rated capacity of the welding transformer is below this percentage. Lancaster Park.— No recommendation was made by the finance committee on a letter from the Lancaster Park Action Committee proposing future consultations between the committee and the council. “If Association football needs a venue for an international match, the council will have to provide it at English Park, and the council and ratepayers will have to meet the cost of getting the park in order.” said Cr. P. J. Skellerup. Sumner Cliffs.—A cliff face near Shag Rock appeared to have dangerous spots, the works committee reported. As it was a favourite parking spot at week-ends, a warning barrier and notices had been erected. Later it was hoped to have some of the danger reduced by barring down and shotting, but the work would be difficult and dangerous to anyone not really capable and experienced.

Risingholme Centre. — Cr. P. J. Skellerup, chairman of the reserves committee, was appointed the council’s representative on the general committee of the Risingholme Community Centre, to replace the late Cr. W. J. Cowles. Intersection Plans.—A series of traffic islands to hold up vehicles making a right-hand turn or going up St. Andrew's Hill road is being investigated by the traffic committee as a solution to difficulties at the St. Andrew's Hill roadFerry road intersection. More Motels.— Tire council approved an application for additional motel units at Shirley Lodge. Y.M.C.A. Clubrooms.—Approval was given to an application by the Young Men’s Christian Association to use two further sections for additions to the Y.M.CA. youth centre in Greers road. The sections are next to the association’s land and have frontages on Anstorer street. Durham Street Crossing.— A sub-committee of the town planning committee has been appointed to hear objections to the closing of the Durham street railway crossing.

Traffic Laning.— A trial permitting the movement of through traffic in both the centre and left-hand lane at the automatic lights at the intersection of Manchester, High and Lichfield streets had not worked very satisfactorily. the traffic committee said. For it to do so it would be necessary to clear the far side of the intersection of parked vehicles, and the committee did not think such a parking prohibition was warranted at present. The council agreed to reintroduce the original system of laning. Pleasant Point Jetty.— Hazards of embarking and disembarking passengers from launches at the Pleasant Point jetty had been drawn to the council’s attention, the by-laws committee said. The Marine Department agreed that some control was necessary on bathing, fishing and berthing of launches. The council agreed that there should be a notice erected to keep persons off the jetty except for embarkation and disembarkation. Household Vending.— The council granted the Christchurch Junior Chamber of Commerce permission to sell blood and bone to householders on June 17, the proceeds to be used for charity.

Early Sumner.— The council bought for £lO a backdrop showing early Sumner. The backdrop was offered to the council by the Richmond Hill Golf Club and will be retained for use in the Sumner Town Hall.

Motels Approved.—Permission was given for a block of three motels at 188 Union street, provided no objections are received to the proposal. When flats are demolished, the owner proposes to build a further five units in two blocks.

CMI Defence.— The appointment of a part-time organiser of civil defence in Christchurch at a salary of £6OO a year was approved by the council, which will provide accommodation for the officer and meet a proportionate share of the cost.
