BUILDING IN THE SQUARE

Progress League Concerned

Concern that a nine-storey building was to be built in Cathedral square was expresssed at a meeting of the Canterbury Progress League last evening. The league decided to write to the CityCouncil asking for its future policy on buildings in the Square and on retaining and improving the dignity of the Square. Mr P. M. Mac Shane said that the nine-storey building was to be "stuck up without regard to the other architecture in the Square, particularly that of the Cathedral.”

The secretary (Mr H. R. Pool) said he had been speaking with an officer of the Regional Planning Authority and had been told that a large number of high buildings would not be permitted in the Square. “Having got one. it is hard to stop others.” said Mr D W. Gray. “I do not care what denomination you are, the Cathedral stands for something. and has historical significance." said Mr H. E. Radley. “It is not too good now. with the tram sheds stuck under it and lavatories across the road.”

Several members said the Square should not be the bus terminal.
