PAPAROA COAL
No More For
Japan
(From Our Own Reporter) GREYMOUTH, May 17.
One of the last shipments of Paparoa coal for Japan will shortly be taken from Greymouth by the ship Daisei. “After that, there will be no more, so far as we are concerned,” said Mr S. T. Taniguchi. one of the directors of the Banno Trading Company, in Greymouth today
The Banno Trading Company entered into a contract with the Labour Government m April last year for the shipment from Greymouth of 50.000 tons of Paparoa coal for use in steelworks in Japan Mr Taniguchi said that another ship, the Daiei would probably arrive early next month, the extended contract from April to the end of May having allowed the company to send four ships after the original contract ended. The Daiei will be the last of these.
The Daisei. which is expected to sail tomorrow for Nelson to top off her cargo with timber, will take less than 3000 tons of Paparoa coal. The Daiei will take a similar quantity, so that of the contract for 50.000 tons, only about 32.000 will have gone overseas
The coal had been of good quality, and very suitable for coking, but his company was unable at present to carry the trade on. said Mr Taniguchi
Mr Taniguchi left on return to Wellington this evening after having seen the Daisei, and discussing her loading with local authorities.
