Jacksons Run Of Successes

J. W. Jackson, the talented Waitikiri club golfer, added to his remarkable record in the Woodward Cup inter-club competition with wins against J. D. Teehan (Templeton) and A. Burton (Avondale) at the week-end. Not since 1957 has Jackson been beaten in these contests. From then until now he has played 21 cup games for 19 wins and two halves.

In all, Jackson has played 46 games for Waitikiri in the competition since 1954 and has been victorious on 35 occasions. He has halved four games and lost only seven during seven seasons of match play.

I With this imposing record I in mind, it is interesting to note that Jackson was available for representative selec--1 tion this year. Presumably ; the provincial selectors thought him unable to travel, as this was the case in recent ’ seasons. A match player of proven ability, he would i have figured strongly in the selectors’ deliberations. Jackson is one of eight I players that have won all their four matches in the Woodward Cup contest this season. The others are B. L Clegg and J. P. Devine (both Waitikiri). S. C. Cliff, J. R Broadhurst. K. D. Foxton and D. A. Stevens (all Russley A) and D. G. McAllister (Kaiapoi). M. J. McNally (Waitikiri) surprisingly lost both his games at the week-end and thus marred a sound record. Previously he had lost only one match in three years’ play, during which he won 12 and halved four of his 17 games. Devine, incidentally, has now recorded 31 victories in 45 matches while Stevens, a comparative newcomer to the competition, has won nine out of 10 games. But for solidity it would ) still be hard to surpass C. J. I Ward (Christchurch A>, who i has had three wins and a I half this season. His record now stands at 41 matches for i 30 wins, six halves and five losses.
