Miss Susan Kellaway Wins “Miss Canterbury” Contest
A Christchurch model, Miss Susan Kellaway, won the “Miss Canterbury” section of the “Miss New Zealand International” contest at the Civic Theatre last evening. Miss Kellaway won a “Miss New Zealand” contest earlier this year. The runner-up was Miss Lesley Nichols, a model, of Cashmere. Miss Kellaway, aged 20, is a brunette whose measurements are: bust 35in, waist 21in, hips 34in. She weighs 7st 121 b and her height is sft 51 in.
Miss Kellaway will leave this morning for Rotorua to appear in a film to be produced by the National Film Unit She wiU take part with the four other finalists in the "Miss New Zealand International” contest. After filming in other centres, the five finalists will compete in the national contest in Dunedin on June 2, 3 and 5. Miss Nicholls, who is 18, has hazel eyes and light brown hair. She weighs 8 stone and is sft Sin tall. Her measurements are: bust 34in, waist 22jin, hips, 34in. Last evening's contest and concert had realised about £5OO for the Christchurch branch of the Piunket Society. which was raising funds to extend the Lady King Kantane Hospital, said the branch president (Mrs A. Rose), before announcing the winner. All expenses of the contest were paid by the Joe Brown organisation. The judges were Dr. Helen Field, a medical officer of health with the Health Department; Mr Heath Joyce, producer for the Canterbury Repertory Theatre Society; Mr George Weigel, a Christchurch photographer, and Mrs Weigel. Miss Kellaway was sponsored in the contest by the D.1.C., L*d.. and Miss Nichols by the N.Z. Farmers' Co-op. Association of Canterbury. Ltd. Also included in the evening's entertainment was a “Little Miss Canterbury” contest, when 38 junior contestants w-ere presented to the judging panel The winner w’as Miss Lily Lee. aged 10, of 12 Lambeth crescent. Papanui. She was presented with a blue ribbon. a silver cup, and a sheaf of flowers almost as large as herself.
The variety concert, which was compered by Mr Doug Reid, included items by Mr Jack Thompson (pianist), Mr Charles Hikana (vocal), Mr Alec Jones (vocal), the Wakefield brothers (vocal) the Brodie brothers (vocal and instrumental), and Miss Rosemary Hewstone (piano accordion). Should the ‘‘Miss Canterbury” winner be successful in Dunedin, she will be a guest on the luxury cruiser Himalaya, and will visit Australia, the Philippines, China. Japan, Hawaii, Canada, and the United States. She will compete at the International Beauty Congress at Long Beach, California. in July, for prizes valued at more than £50.000 After returning to New Zealand, she will tour for six weeks before flying to London by way of Thailand,
New Caledonia, Indonesia, Indo-China, Pakistan, Persia, Italy, and France. In London she will parade for the “Beauty Championship of the World” in which prizes are valued at more than £lO.OOO. She will fly back to New Zealand, visiting Continental and Mediterrean countries.
