Death Duties

Sir.—“ Australian” refers to employment. According to the 'Federal Government figures just released, unemployment in the Commonwealth rose during April by more than 9 per cent. There wefe 89.000 persons actually registered as jobless. Although many of the curbs imposed on the economy in September last have been removed and Australia's overseas reserves are rising steadily, the unpalatable fact remains that more than 2.1 per cent, of the work-force there is not collecting the weekly pay-packet. So on the balance we here in New Zealand (in spite of this talk of disinheritance) can consider ourselves lucky.— Yours, etc., W.H.T. May 15, 1961.
