KAKAPO DIES

Fourth Of Five Captured

(N2 Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 16. Another kakapo—the fourth of five captured by Department of Internal Affairs officers in "Fiordland—had died at the Mount Bruce Station in the Wairarapa. the Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr Gotz) said today. He said the cause of death had been diagnosed as aspergillosus infection, a fungoid disease. “Although it is unfortunate that we have lost four of the five kakapo procured with so much trouble, we have learnt a considerable amount we would not otherwise have found out." the Minister said He said that the surviving kakapo at Mount Bruce seemed to be fit and in good heart. According to the officer looking after the bird it was, unlike the others, alert and active and eating well, and it seemed to have settled down in its new environment.
