CAPTAIN HUNT

Southland Prospect

“The Press" Special Sereice DUNEDIN, May 16.

Captain Hunt has done exceptionally well since he beat the milers at Beaumont last month and he appears to be in the right order to test the open handicappers in the Waiau Handicap at Invercargill on Saturday. A member of M. Jopson’s team at North Taieri, Captain Hunt is usually trained l at the Salisbury track but; along with the rest of tbej team he was worked at I Wingatui this morning. He I worked well over a round of j pacework increasing the pace over the concluding stages and was keen to improve on the effort. Formerly trained at Riccarton, the Treasure Hunt gelding has started only three times since he joined the Jopson stable. He was twice third in sprint events at the Riverton meeting and was a decisive wanner at Beaumont.

On Saturday, he will be ridden by the promising Wingatui apprentice, R. N. Marsh. Glendale (K. J. Schubert), a stablemate of Captain Hunt, showed his fitness for the Te Tua Handicap, the hack sprint at Invercargill, when he easily accounted for Depend (R. A. Low) over five furlongs in Imin 7 2-5 sec. He could have improved on 41 sec for the last three furlongs. The 'best time for five furlongs was recorded by Linton (H. T. Anderton). Sarobin (B. J. Anderton), and Waaf (J. D. Pankhurst). which were together in Imin Ssec. the opening two furlongs in 25sec. Linton and Waaf are engaged in the Te Tua Hack Handicap. Both have drawn wide and Waafs trip to Invercargill may be cancelled. Sydtrev 18. E. Kennedy) worked well over five furlongs in Imin 7sec, the last three furlongs in 40sec. He was brought home from Ashburton, and is to start in the Orepuki Hack Steeplechase at the Southland meeting. Kumai (B. J. Anderton), Sir Edwin <G. Mclntosh), No Offence <H. T. Anderton), and Arctic Star (W. Guy) finished in line at the end of six furlongs in Imin 25 2-5 sec. There was not much pace on in the early stages, but they came home the last three furlongs in 42sec. Panel (B. E. Kennedy) completed a round of pace work by sprinting home the last three furlongs in 41 3-ssec. The Panair mare has been second in three of her last four races. She was runner-up to Solus at Invercargill on Saturday and will be one of the favoured runners in the Waiau Handicap

The fast work was held on the inside grass and conditions were ideal after a frost.
