HOSPITAL AT KAIAPOI

Use Of Maternity Facilities

Persons who refused to use the maternity facilities in Kaiapoi “because they considered themselves socially superior to those who do” were described as snobbish and lacking in community spirit by Cr. K. Sinclair at a meeting of Kaiapoi Borough Council on Monday evening. Lack of use of local facilities was the cause of the North Canterbury Hospital Board’s doubt as to the need for a new maternity hospital in Kaiapoi. Persons who went elsewhere when local amenities would suffice were shirking a responsibility to the rest of the community, said Cr. Sinclair. A new eight-bed maternity hospital in Kaiapoi was proposed by the board some time ago. No start had been made yet, said Cr. Sinclair. A motion was passed that the council recognise the need for greater use of existing facilities and urge residents of the borough and surrounding districts to use these facilities whereever practicable.
