Accident In Belgium

(NZ. Press Association) OAMARU, May 16. A former Oamaru man. Mr James Kemnitz Familton, aged 28, who has been on holiday in Britain and on the Continent, was drowned at Whalen, Belgium, last Sunday. Advice to this effect has been received from the British Embassy, but details of the accident are not yet available. Mr Familton was one of New Zealand’s leading junior tennis players some years ago. Educated at Waitaki Boys' High School, where he was the singles tennis champion. Mr Familton joined the firm of Wright Stephenson and Company, Ltd., In Oamaru, in 1948. For some years he was a North Otago singles champion and doubles champion with K. J. Logan. He was also a representative junior Rugby player. In 1954 he was transferred by his firm to Ashburton, where he took an active part in tennis, table tennis and squash. Again partnered by Mr Logan. Mr Familton was for three years in succession tennis doubles champion of Mid-Canterbury and he was also singles champion. He won the Canterbury Subassociations’ title in Christchurch. Mr Familton was the son of the late Mr L. J. K. Familton and the late Mrs Familton, of Oamaru.
