TEACHERS’ STRIKE
Work Resumes In Glasgow
(N Z.P.A -Reuter—Copyright) GLASGOW, May 16 More than 5000 Glasgow teachers went back to work yesterday after an official one-week strike over pay and recruitment. It was the biggest strike ever staged by British teachers. Although about 2000 teachers stayed at work, 130.000 Glasgow children were without teachers. The stoppage was in protest against a proposed "dilution" of the Scottish grammar school profession by the introduction of non-graduate teachers, and in support of a pay claim. Mr A. Stewart, secretary of the Glasgow Association of the Educational Institute of Scotland, who called the strike, said there might be some coolness between strikers and non-strikers. But, he added: “In the interests of the children’s education there will be no disharmony. Teachers are reasonable people.” About 29,000 of Scotland’s 36.000 teachers belong to the institute.
