STEEPLES WIN
Mananui Not Tested
Mananui, a less-distin-guished half-brother of Bruce, Royal Tan, and My Hero, easily won the Alford Hack and Hunters’ Steeplechase at Ashburton yesterday. He was clear for the last five furlongs, and won untested by two lengths and a half from the win favourite Arctic Sun. which was also runner-up in the hurdles earlier in the day. Mananui is prepared at Wingatui by the leading trainer. H. A. Anderton, for Mr J. Dymond and was ridden by R. O. Cairns. This was Mananui’s first win for the season. His previous best was a third at the Otago Hunt Club’s meetings on March 11. Carried Field Garbett carried the field along at a solid pace for a start, but was in the race for only a mile. He showed signs of tiredness by the time they came through the straight, and was pulled up after jumping the boards near the nine furlongs. Hay Time led then, but Mananui jumped up to him going along the back. The stablemates De Gaulle and. Arctic Sun followed Hay Time and Mananui to the five furlongs, but never looked likely to test Mananui after the Sun King gelding went clear going to the half mile. Mananui came to >the straight going well, too well to be bothered by Arctic Sun or any of the others. Arctic Sun ran one of his usual solid races, but was soundly beaten by two lengths and a half. Arctic Sun’s stablemate De Gaulle was a weakening third six lengths back and 12 lengths clear of Hay Time. Reclaim and Days Bay finished the course, but far behind.
