Sentence For Arson

CN.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. May 15. Appearing for sentence on two charges of arson and an additional charge of setting fire to a motor-car. Bryan Lapwood. aged 19. a labourer was convicted and sentenced to imprisonment for four rears in the Magistrate's Court, Otahuhu. today. He had been remended by Mr R. M. Grant. S M. To obtain additional medical opinions as to Lanwood’s mental condition at the time of the offences. Lapwood's counsel (Mr R. M. Gibbs' said it was clear that accused was suffering from a marked mental aberration and although he might have known what he was doing he could not have appreciated the possible outcome or the serious nature of his actions. Mr Grant said the offence oi arson was among the most serious of crimes in the cc untry. A length?’ sentence was essential in the public interest.
