The Northern Outlet
Sir, —Discussions have been held with some interested bodies regarding this proposal. The Soil Conservation Council should be vitally interested in this proposal, which means destruction of many acres of some of tee best land in the country. To my knowledge no such discussion has taken place. The building of another bridge a few chains unstream from our present traffic bridge, means another obstruction to 4 he free flow of water in flood t-me. Might I respectfully "suggest a new bridge be built at least 40 chains upriver where the river width is adequate to deal with pondave in high floods? Kaiapoi residents who know the river must be very worried over this perpetual flood threat if the bridge is built at this bottle neck.—Yours, etc., H. H. PETRIE. May 15, 1961.
