CLOSING OF SANATORIUM
Arrangements For Ashburton
The monthly chest clinic held in Ashburton by the medical superintendent of the Waipiata Sanatorium would probably’ be carried on by the staff of the Cashmere Sanatorium, the acting-secretary of the North Canterbury Hospital Board (Mr D. Horne) said yesterday. He was commenting on the announcement that the Waipiata Sanatorium is to close soon. The clinic would recommend patients for the sanatorium, give aftercare to former patients, and supervise patients treated at home. Mr Horne said.
“The final arrangements will rest with the superintendent of the Cashmere Sanatorium (Dr. T. O. Enticott). The general intention of the board, however, is to give the kind of service provided for Marlborough and the West Coast.” said Mr Home. Clinics were held every two months in those districts, but he thought the Ashburton clinic would be monthly. The sanatorium wards at Cashmere would be able to cope with the extra load, in spite of the early conversion of the middle floor at the Coronation Hospital for geriatric cases, added Mr Horne. The board had gone into the question carefully when the Ashburton Hospital Board first made a request for facilities in the event of Waipiata closing. There are no patients from Ashburton in Waipiata at present. The middle floor was still empty, but would be occupied by geriatric patients as soon as necessary conversion work had been planned and carried out. . A sub-committee to arrange for the planning had been set up by the board at its last meeting.
