CHATHAM IS. RATES

M.P.’s Concern At Increase

Concern has been expressed by Mr N. E. Kirk, M.P. for Lyttelton, at the increased county rate for the Chatham Islands. In a supplied statement, Mr Kirk said: — “The new Chatham Islands county rate recently announced by the Minister of Internal Affairs <Mr Gotz) is such as will give rise to very real concern to everyone associated with the Chatham Islands. This latest increase means that Chatham Islanders will be paying substantially more than the equivalent of the maximum rate permitted under the Rating Act. “It is very perturbing indeed to learn that the in’erdepartmenta! committee has not yet presented a report to Mr Gotz. because early action is necessary to enable provision to be made in the atnnuai estimates to meet the recommendations of the committee. It is clear that, although the Chatham Islanders have tried very hard to help themselves, a fact that is clearly shown by the new county rate, some increased Government assistance must play a proper part in developing a sound economic basis for progress in the Chatham Islands.”
