ST. HELENS WING
Contract For £286,000
A contract for building a four-storeyed wing to St. Helens Hospital in Christchurch has been let to John Calder, Ltd., for about £286,000. The wing will have a floor area of about 40,000 sq. ft. and will take about two years and a half to build. Work will start almost immediately. The addition will increase accommodation from 50 to about 110 beds. The wing will include theatres and labour rooms. Pile-driving for the wing was let as a separate contract and has been completed. A feature of the big block will be its finish of “fairfaced concrete." This is concrete with the rough surface left by the boxing not plastered. No tinting will be used so that the facade will be a dull grey as a foil to the warm tints of the existing buildings. The new wing will be about the middle of the property in Colombo street on the north of the present buildings.
