BEEF TRADE WITH U.S.
Importance To N.Z.
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 14. “Our beef trade is too important and our two-way trade with the United States of such mutual value that we in New Zealand cannot allow the use of insecticides to disrupt it,” said the chairman of the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board (Mr J. D. Ormond) tonight. Mr Ormond said about 25 per cent, of New Zealand’s meat export earnings came from the trade to the United States. About 70 per cent, of New Zealand’s beef exports was sold to American buyers. Mr Ormond said: ’We have taken every precaution to meet the United States inspection requirements. That is why our meat is recognised for its high standard of quality and presentation. I am sure that where insecticides have been used it has been in only a minor way and that this is now being eliminated.” Mr Ormond said that t'he general manager of the board (Mr J. W. De Gruchy) would remain in the United States in the meantime.
