TROTTING LORDSHIP WINS AT OAMARU

Battle With Belroy In Stakes

Lordship, a hot favourite, returned an outstanding effort to wear down Belroy and win the Oamaru Juvenile Stakes on Saturday. The race was the main event at the Oamaru Trotting Club’s winter meeting.

Lordship drew the second line at the start and hesitated for a stride or two. However, he received a good run along the inner and was sixth before the end of a furlong. He followed Belroy into the last furlong and gradually wore him down to win decisively.

The merit of Lordship's win was quickly recognised by the crowd, who gave him an ovation as he was brought back to the birdcage by his driver, D. D. Nyhan. Loriship paced the 10 furlongs in 2min 49 3-ssec. a smart effort on a slow track. He has now had five wins and three placings from eight starts. His next appearance will be in the New Zealand Sapling Stakes at Ashburton on June 3 when it is expected that he will again meet Belroy. The others macle little impression. For Certain and Willycan made up ground for •bird and fourth respectively, but they were eight lengths behind Belroy. Two Southland pacers. Yare end Robin Dundee, fought out the finish to the first leg of the double, the A. R McDowell Memorial Handicap. Yare. a son of Logan Derby and Rustic Maid, was slow away. He improved sharply inside the half-mile and fought on gamely for K. Ballorh.

Robin Dundee's placing was full of merit as she was awkwardly placed over the final three furlongs. By the time she was clear. Yare had established a wanning break. Local Princess, the 11'10 favourite in an even-betting race, fought on slightly better than Robyn for a narrow win in the Papakaio Handicap, the second leg of the double. The favourite. Implore, received a shocking run and finished fifth. The Yare—Local Princess double combination paid £ 107 17s fid for £l. The meeting was held in eool. overcast weather before a fair crowd. The track was cutting out.

Totalisator investments amounted to £25.641 10s, <ncluding £2851 5s on the double. compared with £35 666 15s last year. Juvenile Stakes Lordship hesitated for two strides at the start of the Oamaru Juvenile Stakes, but was quickly pacing clearly and followed Avante through. Rembrandt and Belroy began best and were clear by five lengths from Avante. Snell and Lordship at the end of three-quarters of a furlong. Rembrandt W’orked clear before the end of two furlongs. with Lordship being taken out from the rails at that stage in about sixth place just behind Snell. Strip improved sharply racing through the straight the last time and took a slender lead over Rembrandt racing to the five furlongs. Lordship improved sharply with two and a-half furlongs to run. Belroy pulled out just in front of him and he was steadied. Belroy going to the front at the two furlongs. Belroy led Lordship into the straight, with Rembrandt tiring next, two lengths in front of Sneß Avante, Strip and Southern Smoke. Lordship trailed Belroy until just inside the furlong. He gradually inched up to Belroy and fought on strongly to win well by half a length. Belroy was unchallenged for second, eight lengths in front of For Certain, which made up ground. Willycan was a short length back fourth, followed by Snell, Southern Smoke. Rembrandt. Avante. Adioson and Otikerama Boy.

Happy Songster, Wee Mike. Strip. Untrue and JohnnyWarrior were slow beginners Keen Finish Yare and Robin Dundee fought out a keen finish to the R. A. McDowell Memorial Handicap. Yare gaining a short neck decision. Yare was slow away, being tenth when the field settled down. Robin Dundee was handily placed throughout, but became badly placed near the three furlongs.

Deep lead set a leisurely pace and turned for home just ahead of Leslie Grattan, with Hydro Boy, Napoleon Hanover. Robin Dundee, Resolution and No Charge handy. Yare continued his run to be in front just inside the furlong. Robin Dundee gave him a good start from the straight entrance and made a game effort to overhaul him. However, Yare fought on strongly to win by a short neck. No Charge finished boldly from the middle of the field for third half a length back, four lengths in front of Gay Diamond, with Napoleon Hanover. Leslie Grattan. Lauder Scott. Hydro Boy and Real Dieman next. Resolution. Peat Moss and Spangled Princess were slow early. Irish Wit broke at the end of half a mile.
