Wairere Boy Wins At Te Rapa

AUCKLAND, May 14. After he had battled the toughest of finishes with Craddock, Wairere Boy won by a nose in the first leg. the President’s Handicap, at Te Rapa yesterday. There was hardly anything between the two until Craddock faded just In the last stride. Craddock had “bolted” to the front wide out with two furlongs to go and his performance to last the 11 furlongs course as well as he did was highly creditable Craddock and Wairere Boy ran close together with 100 yards to go and there was great excitement as they continued their battle right to the post. Wairere Boy, a six-year-old gelding from Matamata. won the H. O. Nolan Handicap at Ellerslie three starts before so he is having a most successful year. He does not always show his best but there is no doubt that on his day he is able to run the longer middle distances very we>l indeed. The 6/8 favourite with bettors on the win and place machine, Wairere Bov paid £lB 2s 6d and £6 8s 6d. Craddock was the popular fancy and Pin Money (third) was 8/7. The double, Wairere Boy and Seafarer, paid £626 4s for £l. Seafarer’s success came in the Stewards’ Handicap, which he won easily from the visiting Waitara horses. Disorder (second) and Messalina (third). Having failed the previous week over a mile. Seafarer was at good odds, his win and place returns being £2S 16s and £9 ss.
