Caldwell Wins In Britain
N.Z.P .a -Keuter —JJopt/npht) LONDON, May 14. I. Caldwell, the 30-year-old London dentist, won the English amateur golf championship at Wentworth, Surrey, in a tremendous duel with G. Clark, from Newcastle. Caldwell won at the 37th hole, in a “sudden death” play-off. He won five of the first seven holes, was two up at the end of the morning round and was still two up with only five holes to play. Caldwell’s victory makes him an automatic choice for the next English team and a “possible” for the British Walker Cup side to play against the United States in Seattle in September. He last represented Britain in 1955. and he was dropped from the English team two years ago. KELSON SPORTS AWARD Miss N. Campbell Successful (N.Z. Press Association) NELSON. May 13. Miss Nicki Campbell, of Nelson, the New Zealand woman’s golf champion, was announced today as winner of the Nelson “Evening Mail" sports edition's sportsman -of-the-year award for the Nel-son-Marlborough-Buller area. The excellence-in-sports award went to Gary Bartlett, Marlborough (cricket); C. J. Mcßae. Marlborough (cycling); G. Pyne. Marlborough (athletics); Mrs E. Butts. Westport (bowls) and Mrs Irone Brough, Nelson (indoor basketball).
