GOLF Russley A Leads In Woodward Cup

Templeton, which caused one of the biggest upsets last year by beating Waitikiri, came close to repeating this feat when the third and fourth rounds of the Woodward Cup competition were played at Shirley yesterday. Templeton halved "the match when Waitikiri’s two top players, the last in, recorded victories. In the morning, Waitikiri had been given a scare by Avondale, but otherwise there was not much in a full day’s play to excite particular interest. Russley A now leads the competition by half a point from Waitikiri, with three rounds to be played.

Shirley was heavy after rain, and the approaches to the greens were very muddy and dead. With 12 inter-club matches being played—96 individual games in all—it was a busy scene, and the players appeared to have so much on their minds, with weather, course, opponents, and the state of the games, that it is doubtful whether Mother’s Day was given more than a passing thought. Russley A was weakened by the absence of the Freyberg Rosebowl team's captain, R. C. Murray, and Waitikiri was without its top player. R. E. Clements, who has also gone to Napier in preparation for the Freyberg tournament. But Russley A, which won the cup last winter, won both Its matches with ease. Waitikiri had to produce some good golf throughout the day to hold off its opponents. Among the most impressive players was B. L. Clegg, named reserve this year for the Canterbury Rosebowl team. A spectacular hitter, but one who has his long game under much stricter control than he used to exercise a year or so ago, and whose putting has improved immensely, Clegg was only one over scratch for the 15 holes of his match against Avondale’s young D. J. Gaudin. Clegg's tee shots were superb throughout the day. and his scoring, in rather cold and depressing conditions, was excellent. In the afternoon Clegg started wretchedly against A. C. Browne, of Templeton, one of his closest rivals for a place in the Canterbury team. They began at the fifteenth, and after seven holes Clegg was three down. He hit his iron on the head at the fifteenth. found the ditch at the next, and putted poorly, as well as repeating his morning errors with chipping short. But from that point he recovered splendily, and covered the remaining 14 holes they played in scratch figures. Some of his long irons were magnificent, and his whole game looked extremely efficient. Browne suffered only putting lapses at first, but later he developed costly inaccuracies off the tees and with his fairway woods. Clegg won. 2 and 1, and his score could well have been much better, for he had some incredibly bad luck with putts. The former Canterbury champion, L. J. James, one of the most stylish swingers on the course, had a tense battle with the ebullient F. W. Roberts (Avondale). Roberts sank a good putt for a birdie at the fifth, would have chipped in at the sixth had he had the flag held, and then holed a long putt at the seventh for a birdie. The eighth was halved in birdies: but after that, Roberts did not putt so well, and James, although three-putting the fifteenth, squared the match and they stayed square until the end. In the afternoon James began brilliantly against the deliberate D. M. Murdoch (Templeton), with eight bogeys and a birdie. He seemed to tire later, but his lead was good enough for him to win one hole from home.

Playing his first matches since his return from overseas. I. B. Cromb, the top Kaiapoi player, thoroughly extended K. D. Foxton of Russley A. The match was won and lost on the fifteenth and sixteenth. At the fifteenth. Foxton chipped in. and Cromb very nearly did the same thing. At the next hole. Cromb’s chip stayed out only through wilfulness. Cromb was beaten more convincingly in the afternoon when J. G. Scott (Christchurch A> played splendidly, with length and accuracy, leaving Cromb few openings. P. G. Z. Harris, who has been selected for New Zealand's cricket tour of Sjouth Africa, is showing a distinct improvement in his golf. He plays for Christchurch B. and lost his game against J. A. Mackay i ChristchuiKh £.), only on the last greet? Harris was 76, four over scratch, Mackay one better. In the afternoon Harris met another noted cricketer, E. H. Richards (Russley A) Richards, full of length and error, had a desperate struggle to win, for Harris had nine bogeys in the first 10 holes. Richards played the shot of the match at the twelfth, where he squared the game by emerging from the rough to within a foot of the pin. Richards led for the first t.me at the fourteenth, and won with a curious sequence —Harris took the fifteenth with a birdie, lost the next, won the next, lost the last.

Another well-known personality, W. D. Armstrong, made a welcome return, and against A. C. Browne came from three down, seven holes from home, to square the match. Armstrong, as cheerful and relaxed as ever, was one under scratch for the last six holes: they both finished with 74’s, two fine rounds.
