INCOME OF PARISHES
Bishop Seeks Higher Targets
(N.Z Press Atwiatlon) AUCKLAND, May 14. An appeal to Anglican parishes to set themselves a target of • 20 per cent increase on last year"* income was made by the Bishop of Auckland (the Rt Rev. E. A. Gowing) in a pastoral letter read in Anglican churches in the Auckland diocese today. “One of the urgent matter* in many rapidly-growing parishes is that of church buildings,' said Bishop Gowing. “If thi* needful extension work is to be undertaken and also if present commitments are to be faithfully carried out, money must be available.” There was a general tendency to fall below—sometimes far below—the levels of Riving reached three or four year* ago. said Bishop Gowing. Some of the results achieved in the Initial campaigns might have been surprising, but there could be no doubt that they were an indication of what wa* possible when large numbers of church people gave of their substance to the work of the church. “It is imperative that we do not slip back Into the old ways of the old days,” he said. “If our work Is to be maintained—yet alone extended —there must be a much higher standard of giving than there was in the days before the campaigns.” It was a critical moment for the financial resources of the church and he asked *ll parishioners to realise this and face it.
