ERADICATION OF HYDATIDS

Campaign Results “Encouraging”

tN.Z Press Association) WELLINGTON. May 14. The results of the hydatids campaign so far were most encouraging and showed wihat could be done with the full co-operation of the community. said the deputy Director-General of Health (Dr. R. G. T. Lewis). Dr. Lewis was presenting certificates to 29 hydatids control officers who have just completed a training course at Wallaceville. Emphasising the health nroblems renr-’ c ented hv hydatids, Dr. Lewis said the effect on human beings was severe. At the same time there was the loss, running into millions of pounds, of exportable meat products brought about by hydatids in sheep. Dr. Lewis said the control officers were “ambassadors with a mission to deal with a preventable disease.” It was fortunate, he added, that the cause of hydatids and how to prevent it were known. Like other diseases, it was not always possible to eradicate completely. “The incidence of the disease can be cut to a minimum,” he said.
