LEAGUE Auckland Trounces Canterbury, 38-4

(Ittv Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, May 14. A well-drilled Auckland Rugby League team had little difficulty in beating Canterbury at Carlaw Park on Saturday. The young Canterbury side showed a disappointing lack of initiative, and wilted badly in the second half as Auckland raced away to win 38-4.

The teams were: Auckland.— G. Phillips. D. Nathan, N. Denton, R. Billington; G. Turner, W. Sorenson 'captain); P. Schults; L. Olliff; R. Ackland. D. Hammond, J. Constable, J. Pat'erson, R. Harrison. Canterbury.—A. Smith; A. Amer. R. Turton. K. Harding; J. Bond, R. Pounsford; W. Godfrey; M. Cooke; R. McLean. E. Tavendale; M. Mohi, N. Diggs, K. Pearce. Canterbury began by swarming everywhere in defence. but in the end the experienced Auckland side had Canterbury buffeted in the forwards, and run ragged in the backs. Opening before a crowd of 9000. the match promised well when Canterbury took the lead with a 35-yard penalty from the full-back, A. Smith. W. Sorenson, however, replied for Auckland with an identical kick. Auckland took the lead when the half-back P.

Schultz, passed to R. Ackland, who walked over to score. Denton Scores Twice D. Nathan scored an easy try on the wing before N. Denton ended the half with two fine tries. At half-time, with Auckland leading 14-2, R. Cooke replaced Denton. In the next 10 minutes, the Auckland forward, D. Hammond, scored three tries. Smith then goaled a free kick from 40 yards out for Canterbury. Next, Cooke shot across in the right-hand corner for Auckland, and then Ackland scored. Cooke then scored his second try, and G. Phillips, at full-back, another. Auckland was not successful with its goalkicking, and after a variety of kickers had been tried, the final score showed 10 tries, but only three conversions, all by Cooke.
