KAINGA CHURCH DEDICATED
170 Persons At Ceremony
Built as a result of more than 18 months’ co-operation among members of a number of church denominations in the Belfast-Styx district, the newly completed St. John’s Church of England. Kainga. was dedicated cn Saturday afternoon by the Bishop of Christchurch (the Rt. Rev. A K. Warren). Others present included the Ven. Archdeacon H. M. Cocks, and representatives of the Salvation Army and of Presbyterian and Methodis* clergy of the district. In spite of the cold, rainy conditions about 170 persons packed the small church for the ceremony. Bishop Warren told them that the new building reminded him strongly of a small West Coast church with whose building he had been associated. He also referred to the manner in w’hich so many persons of different denominations had contributed to the building of the new church. Although the new vicar (the Rev. R. A. Carsen), resident vicar for the district, did not speak at the ceremony, he told "The Press” yesterday that he wished to extend grateful thanks to the people of the district for their "wonderful co-operation” in such a venture. "I think this achievement has proved just what can be done by people from all walks of life and faiths,” he said. The new church is built of concrete stucco blocks and the concrete flooring has completed with cork tiles The furnishings have . been done in modem Swedish style and. with the ornaments, have mos*lv been contributed by residents of the district.
